A fine film.i cannot fault it. Auch a classy film. The wonderful Conrad Hall was the cinematographer and won the academy award posthumously for this film. Great reaction. I love the score too.

Jean Arthur played Marion Starratt in Shane. She was about 52 in Shane and it was her first colour movie and her very last movie performance.

The ending of American Graffiti, the H.S. pics of the four main characters and what happened to them, bookmarks the ending of an era...a time of innocence before the horrors of the middle to late '60's, (JFK, MLK, RFK assassinations and Viet Nam) and a change of the culture. This and other elements of the movie are what elevates Graffiti from a teen movie to real art. It's possible that AG will be remembered as Lucas's greatest movie.

That was not the ocean, you saw. It was Lake Michigan. We Michiganders, who grew up, with regular summer visits to one of the Great Lakes, are not awed the first time we see the Pacific or Atlantic oceans. We know what a huge body of water looks like. The scene was shot on the west side of Michigan; not far from my hometown. An incredibly beautiful area, in an incredibly beautiful state!

On location in Ceylon (today called Sri Lanka, an island off the coast of India.). Unbelievably awful conditions. Real bridge. Real train. Real explosion. No CGI. If the explosion did not work perfectly,- if only part of the ridge was destroyed, or if the train did was damaged and unusable for a reshoot, the whole movie would have been ruined- too expensive to reshoot it. This was REAL film making by a truly remarkable director. One of the great films of all time, and nothing like it will ever be made again.

They sure knew how to jerk the tears in those old westerns . I believe that this film was the first to get away from the ‘ singing cowboy ‘ type westerns .

Great reaction! A lot of gut responses that were fun to watch. But, these are two really different films. Alien is an outstanding horror movie. Aliens is a typical action flick with standard stereotypes. We obviously have a more visceral reaction to the simplicity of warfare to the extent that it more easily stimulates our emotions. Don’t get me wrong, I was in the theater the day this film premiered and loved it, but I prefer the tense, slower pace of the original. And of course once again Cameron has used his propensity to copy that which comes before. The man steals more ideas than any other filmmaker. He sometimes does it well (T2 and The Abyss) but he usually creates a lesser product (Titanic and Avatar). You obviously watched the theatrical release and I commend you for that. Do yourself a favor and watch the director’s cut. It has scenes that both enhance and detract from the original version and you can judge for yourself which is better. I favor the theatrical.

As an historical aside, the Italians, Capone and his capo Nitti, would've had no alliances with Irish mobs except for the occasional truce. The Saint Valentines Day massacre is probably the lowest of low points.

I love, LOVE disaster movies. Twister, Dante’s Peak, Armageddon. But the ones from the 70’s,and there’s a lot, are freaking amazing. I do like the remake. Most don’t but I recommend it. For sure.

Nickelson didn’t “cave”. It was HIS decision. That makes all the difference to him. So interesting that you compared it to The Wild Bunch, one of my all time favorites that I felt you didn’t really appreciate. Quiness/Holden…wow. The Madness, Madness is about war. The Horror, the Horror from Apocalypse Now…..same thing.

It’s always great to find a similar depth of love for a film. This one is consistently among my top-10 of all time. Every aspect of it seems perfect. I seldom buy soundtracks, but I bought this one, and quickly followed it with a couple others by Thomas Newman. I hope you’ll continue with Paul Newman. Here’s my three biggest recommendations: The Verdict (1982) great courtroom drama by Sidney Lumet. Nobody’s Fool (1994) a great adaptation of Richard Russo’s novel. The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) a rare comedy role, and it’s the Coen brothers.

If you want to watch a movie about outlaws, to understand their psychology, here's a really nice recommendation for you - 'Tough Guys' (1986), with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. A comedy actually!

LOVE YOUR REACTION! This is a sad but an emotionally BEAUTIFUL & moody film with a great moving soundtrack and an incredible cast & performances. Told through the eyes of a son coming of age in an era during a lifestyle that is usually glamorized in movies, this harsh but warm naturalistic depiction of a father & son relationship is so powerfully sincere & honest. I've watched this several times and always ends wiping away tears. One of Hank's best films and maybe the amazing Paul Newman's last that doesn't get enough recognition.

How about watching a very different kind of Tom Hanks movie....? 🤔 I propose "The Ladykillers".

Honestly, if you take away the cars, this really does have an old-timey western frontier feel about it. So glad you picked this to view, it's really what makes a channel sometimes.

Great Movie

Such a great film and rarely reacted to. So glad you did. Sam Mendes is an outstanding filmmaker and his stage experience really shows in the performances he gets. You should see his “American Beauty”, if you haven’t already (despite it starring that creep, Kevin Spacey).

This movie definitely deserves more love. It's one of my favorites. And totally agree with you about the score - it sets the mood perfectly. The word "haunting" is overused sometimes, but it absolutely fits here.
